Field Service Engineer I

Service Division - Hampton, GA - Full Time

Job Summary:
Perform field service duties associated with installing, adjusting, and complex electrical/mechanical troubleshooting high-voltage switches and switching devices in electric utility substations. The devices include disconnect switches, circuit switchers, load break switches, capacitor switches, circuit breakers, transformers, mobile trailers, ballistic walls, and other products. The ideal candidate will have advanced knowledge of Southern States products and be able to provide technical support to Field Service Technicians.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Test faulty equipment to diagnose malfunctions, using test equipment or software and applying knowledge of the functional operation of electronic units and systems.
  • Represent Southern States on any site service where an engineering-focused resolution to a problem is necessary.
  • Be able to instruct not only on the installation and adjustment of the equipment but also present a technical presentation on the design of Southern States equipment.
  • Utilize drawings and schematics to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair equipment.
  • Study blueprints, schematics, manuals, or other specifications to determine installation procedures.
  • Repair or adjust equipment, machines, or defective components, replacing worn parts, such as gaskets or seals in watertight electrical equipment.
  • Utilize precision measuring equipment to test for defective wiring and connections, micrometers to check for excessive wear on parts, and oscilloscopes/analyzers to troubleshoot, align, adjust, and calibrate circuits to diagnose and repair systems effectively. 
  • Maintain equipment logs that record performance problems, repairs, calibrations, or tests.
  • Inspect industrial equipment components for accurate assembly and installation or defects, such as loose connections or frayed wires.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance tasks, such as checking, cleaning, or repairing equipment, to detect and prevent problems.
  • Calibrate testing instruments and installed or repaired equipment to prescribed specifications.
  • Examine work orders and converse with equipment operators to detect equipment problems and ascertain whether mechanical or human errors contributed to the problems.
  • Set up and test industrial equipment to ensure that it functions properly.
  • Operate equipment to demonstrate proper use or to analyze malfunctions.
  • Maintains the highest priority on meeting customer expectations.
  • Maintains company property and assets by established policies.
Other Responsibilities:
  • When directed, coordinates with and assists other departments in solving problems.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in a related field.
  • Experience: At least one to five years experience working with low-voltage equipment.
  • Travel 65%: Ability to travel domestically and internationally on short notice.
  • Able to do advanced engineering analysis on mechanical and electrical failures in the field.
  • Ability to read wiring schematics.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Be self-sufficient at problem-solving.
  • Candidate should have good electro-mechanical aptitude.
  • Reliable and dependable.
  • Able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Professional at all times when representing Southern States.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience: Five years experience working with high-voltage substation equipment.
  • Knowledge of operating mechanism layouts and designs.
